PART FOUR – PLANNING AND PRE-PRODUCTION, PRODUCTION AND POST

PRE – PRODUCTION

This next stage of my Final Major Project, is the part where I plan my final production. For this I will need to make a script, storyboard, Recce, Risk assessments and also do a cast list of the people that I will be using for my production.

THE IDEA:

My final idea is that a girl called Lily, wakes from an intense dream where a ghost is whispering to her, the ghost is her brother, Ben, who has died tragically. When she wakes, she decides to go downstairs to get some milk so that she can then go back to sleep. A door starts to open and creak and then the cupboard slams shut that she left open from getting a glass. She runs upstairs and is followed by the ghost. She then slams her door shut and goes back into bed. She curls into a ball and the ghost reaches for her to grab her, the audience will see this as a shadow on the wall. This is quickly broken by Lily’s bedside lamp turning off. Her door handle then starts to rattle and the door opens. Lily starring at the door then hears her mother scream and gets up because she is concerned. Before she can get to the door of her mothers room, the bathroom tap starts gushing which she then turns off. How my short film ends, Lily returns to her room just thinking that the whole thing is still a dream and nothing is actually happening, the ghost then gets his revenge and grabs her leg, pulling her under the bed, where she then disappears.

RECCES:

FIRST LOCATION:

IMG_20190331_172554.jpg

My first location that I want to film for will be for the intro, I want to film in a woods near to my house. The reason why I want a woods is because this will be for the dream scene where my main character sees the dead brother.

MEMBERS PRESENT DURING RECCE:

Aaron Briggs

LOCATION:

(Where is the set located?)

Dartmoor, woods, Okehampton.

ACCESS TO LOCATION:

(How do you get to the location you are filming? Can you get there easily?)

It is easy to locate as it is a 5 minute drive from my house that I usually go to for a dog walk which is where I got the inspiration from as a location.

POWER:

(Does the location have access to power?)

As this is outside, I will not have access to power unless I use a generator however I will be filming in the day so do not need lighting as will be using natural light as the source.

NOISE:

(Is the location too noisy?)

Depending on the weather, it can actually be very quite with only the distant stream being heard.

PERMISSION:

(Are you allowed to film there?)

The place is open to the public and basically empty so public getting in the way won’t be a problem and I will be allowed to film there.

SUITABILITY:

(Is it suitable for the shoot?)

I want a this location for a dream scene. I think this is suitable because of the isolation feeling and the space. I like this setting and is what I was going for.

INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR:

(Will the weather affect the shoot?)

This is an exterior location. Weather shouldn’t be an issue as in rain because I will be filming later in the day and it is a wood so has coverage however will still need to focus on weather before shoot as it is outside so there is the possibility.

SECOND LOCATION:

img_20190416_223133.jpg

img_20190416_223156.jpg

My second location will be my house because I want a house that is normal and becomes haunted.

MEMBERS PRESENT DURING RECCE:

Aaron Briggs

LOCATION:

(Where is the set located?)

My house, Okehampton Devon. Main set in the house will be my sisters bedroom.

ACCESS TO LOCATION:

(How do you get to the location you are filming? Can you get there easily?)

It is a very easy location to get to as it is my house which I live in so won’t need to travel to the location when filming.

POWER:

(Does the location have access to power?)

Yes this location does have access to power and has multiple wall plugs which would be needed as I will have powered lights not LEDs lighting so need the power.

NOISE:

(Is the location too noisy?)

The only thing I would say is there is a lot of ambience, like the fridge and boiler, I can turn these off when filming.

PERMISSION:

(Are you allowed to film there?)

As this is my house, the only permission I need is my parents permission because they are the owners of the property.

SUITABILITY:

(Is it suitable for the shoot?)

My main idea is to have a normal house that is being haunted. I think that the shoot is exactly suitable because I made my idea around the setting in mind from the start.

INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR:

(Will the weather affect the shoot?)

This will be interior however may use my garden for a light placement to look like moonlight so the weather will still affect the shoot and also rain is loud so a film that needs to be almost silent.

RISK ASSESSMENT:

I have got 2 locations that I will be filming in, for each location I need to do a risk assessment for so that I can understand the risks when shooting so that they can be prevented in the best way possible.

FIRST RISK ASSESSMENT

PRODUCTION RISK ASSESSMENT

Filming landscape

Filming running sequence with main actor: Nicole Briggs

HAZARDS LISTED ABOVE AND THE WAYS TO PREVENT:

  • WEATHER: Weather can be a hazard because rain will make the ground slippery which can result in falling and also rain is a hazard to the equipment. High winds can also be a hazard in terms of weather because the wind can push over equipment and cause damage to equipment.
  • COMMS FAILURE: This can be an issue because the location will be quite remote, this means that if phones were to fail or signal was lost, contacting people couldn’t happen. To prevent this, I will make sure that my phone is charged so that my phone will not run out. Also make sure that I keep in range of signal and don’t go too far and too remote.

HAZARDS LISTED ABOVE AND THE WAYS TO PREVENT:

  • GLASS: In my production, my actor will be handling glass, but this isn’t broken glass, it is a glass to use as a prop for pouring milk into it. However, when filming if she should trip over equipment while holding the glass or just drops the glass, it could become an injury.
  • HIRE OF LIGHTING EQUIPMENT: The hazard with hiring the lights is that these become very hot and if they fall over then they can become damaged and can start a fire. Also placement of these should be considered, not placing near curtains or close to anything that will set alight. The hiring of lighting equipment also means that on set, there are a lot more wires which are a trip hazard.
  • CONFINED SPACES: As filming in my house, confined spaces will be common with small hallways, this just means that people may bump into equipment and get injure that way. To prevent I will make sure that the camera is placed in the best position if there are tight places for my shots.

STORYBOARD:

This is a key part of my pre- production because I will be following my storyboard very closely as I need to know how many visual effect shots are needed and when to set them up in the shoot. I will be using the storyboard as a guideline to shoot basically.

CAST LIST:

1st ACTOR:

NICOLE BRIGGS – She will be playing my main role, Lily who is the girl running from the ghost. Nicole is my sister so I have taken into account that she isn’t a professional actor although not ideal versus professional actors it is more convenient to me because of the main location being my house and she was showing an interest to the role.

2nd ACTOR:

JOANNE BRIGGS – This will be a very small part of the short film, the character won’t be shown on camera because I feel that this will add more suspense so this actor is only needed to do voice acting. She will be playing Lily’s mother who screams from another room.

PROPS:

This is just a list of what I will be expecting to use in my scenes: (THIS MAY CHANGE)

  • Mug
  • Lamp
  • glass of milk

Also I will be needing like said in my research, fishing wire or another thin invisible alternative, this is so that I can pull of the “invisible” shots that I want to be doing.

AUDIO:

EQUIPMENT FOR AUDIO:

  • Zoom H4 audio recorder
  • Rode shotgun microphone (for the zoom)
  • Rode camera mount microphone

FOLEY:

  • Door creaking
  • Tap running
  • Door slamming
  • Footsteps up stairs
  • Door handle shaking
  • Body thud

ADR:

  • Ben’s lines
  • Lily lines
  • Mother lines

I will also be recording room tones of each set to have a nice atmosphere and a good mix for the sound later in post production.

PRODUCTION:

IMG_20190418_230559IMG_20190418_230652

I started my first production on the Tuesday of the second week off in the easter holiday, Tuesday the 16th. I begun with filming the house scenes first not the Dartmoor location part and begun at 20:30 when it started getting darker. On the Tuesday, I got my filming done up to the point of getting to the kitchen, this is because the lights needed to be moved in each shot which became time consuming, I think we were about done at around 11pm.

I then started filming the next day at 9pm to shoot the kitchen part which I spent the longest on because this part needed to have the practical effects. We finished filming at around 12pm again.

I then finished my house filming the on Thursday which was after the kitchen, we started filming this at 9pm again so that it would be the same lighting and finished at around 12:30pm by the end of this, I had all the footage that I wanted. I also did the Dartmoor shoot, my second location, on Thursday the 18th during the day at around 4pm.

I have written about my rough edit that I conducted in my production journal and the feedback. Due to this feedback I then went back to do some more filming just to improve audio. I filmed more Foley to add to improve with the feedback in mind. I filmed on Monday the 29th of April. I also filmed some more Foley on the Wednesday the 1st of May because I wanted to record even more to add after doing some editing with the new recordings.
